Profiles of Play is a good source for tracking the progress of young patients. Some of Chazan's authoritative statements on the meaning of play in the treatment process might make useful handouts to give parents of new child-patients who are bewildered why anyone should be paid for just playing with their troubled children. The whole book impresses one with the richness of the enterprise. -- Psychologist Chazan uses a structured approach to observational data and contextual involvement in order to make sure that specific circumstances will not stop her asking important questions about what is going on at any stage of the therapeutic process - with questions she needs to ask in order to understand. At this level, the tension between interpretation and encounter - which is the therapist's version of the thought/feeling conflict - may be prevented from interfering with the reader's own imaginative participation in what is being described. The result is an extremely vivid piece of writing. -- The Journal of the British Association of Dramatherapists

If you don't know about Touhou Project, then you may still appreciate this.
If you want to get to know about the world of Gensoukyou and its inhabitants, this book can help.
But first, be sure you know a good deal of Japanese, especially the kanji.
Matter of fact, unless Japanese is your first language, you may be refering to your Japanese - English Dictionary quite a bit.

Although I can only understand some of it, I appreciate what I can get from this book.

I first got in contact with the residents of Gensokyo by listening to a pice of music. Now I want to learn Japanese, and that's why I bought this book, so I can read and learn more about Touhou, plus I practice Japanese.

Allthough it will be a long time 'till I try to read this book, and learn Japanese (simply because I'm a student and don't live by my self yet) I am looking forward to it.

Full of misunderstandings with some insights

I was looking forward to this book! An important hole in the current agile literature and a book only on this subject. Finally... but ... I'm extremely disappointed.

Jochen Krebs' Agile Portfolio Management consists of 3 parts. Part one is called "Agile for Managers", part two is the things about portfolio management and part three is *other* called organization and environment.

The first part consists of three chapters. The first chapter consists a general motivation for agile development and responding to change. The second chapter is a short introduction to Agile development and the last chapter an introduction to project management. This takes up 1/4th of the book. The explanations are poorly written and full with misunderstandings. To give a concrete example, on page 27 Jochen is suggesting that in Scrum you can not have any other meetings except for the daily Scrum. A recommendation which I've never heard before and I'm pretty sure he didn't actually mean that!

Part two consists of about 125 pages and is the main subject of the book, though it starts with three somewhat introduction chapters called Foundation, Metrics and Return of Investment. These chapters don't show too much experience from the author. The suggestion that TDD and Continuous Integration finds defects early so that one of the main quality metrics is open defect count is absurd and goes directly against advise of great agile literature like "Art of Agile development" or "Sustainable Software Development". It gives the feeling the author simply forgot to learn about agile development before he wrote the book. The explanation of story points was vague, the explanation of Use Case points unnecessary. The talk about return of investment forgot to give actual tools for doing so.

After the first 100 pages, I almost threw away the book and was pretty sure I would rate it 1 start. Though, luckily it started to improve. If you buy this book, I recommend to skip the first 100 pages :)

Chapter 7, 8, and 9 cover three portfolios: Project, resource and asset. The project portfolio covered some good ideas like increasing the portfolio decision frequency, using agile metrics and making other decisions than go/kill. The resource portfolio chapter was poor and doesn't talk much about resource management. The asset portfolio chapter is short but covers some important topics not covered frequently in other places.

Part three just consists of two chapters. The first one uses Scrum to become a portfolio management process. I found the idea interest and absurd. Especially the daily portfolio meeting and the portfolio master seen a sure sign of misapplication. The chapter is speculative, the real story about the real situation is missing. It made me doubt the author has actually done this. The second chapter of part three is a chapter about the PMO. I very strongly disagree with the suggestions from the author, especially making the PMO larger for Agile organizations.

In other words, I only thought that part two was worth my time (and only half of that) thats about 50 pages... Next to this, the writing and editing of the book was poor. Some constructions seem very German and sentences are constructed poorly making me sleepy while reading. I wonder if Microsoft Press did any editing at all or supported the author at all. Quite disappointing.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It's probably better to read some traditional portfolio management book (e.g. Coopers Portfolio Management for New Products) together with some basic Agile books and especially Mike Cohn Agile Estimating and Planning (which covers much of the ROI and value calculation, but explained better). If you read all of these and want some insights and ideas from this book, just read chapter 7, 8 and 9 and skip the rest.

I still rated this book three stars, which is probably too high. After the first 100 pages, I was sure it would not be higher than 1 star. But some chapters contained some insights and that made me decide to give it 2 stars. I switched to three stars simply because I applaud the attempt. This is a new area, there is no existing material and it is great Jochen took this opportunity and tried to fill a gap. Though, a different book is probably needed.

Accurate Assessment of Conventional Software Processes?

While the basic description of agile portfolio management is useful, I found many of the claims about current software project practices to be based on exagerrated weaknesses of these conventional practices.

I believe the author exaggerates the differences between customer expectations and customer requirements. While they can be different, competent systems analysts can capture and document expectations, as well as requirement. The author's view is that traditional requirements analysis, for various reasons cannot be expected to capture customer requirements in a timely and "agile"/adaptable manner. My experience is different.

The author also claims that traditional project management practices contribute to a lack of agility. WBSs, GANT charts and other techniques are inherently inflexible, rigid and labor intensive, in his view. My experience with tools like Microsoft Project is that what-if scenarios and other hypothetical and actual adjustments are easy to create and provide the kind of decision support a project manager needs when requirements change, resources come and go, or schedules tighten unexpectedly.

Having worked on a number of rapid prototyping and quick reaction environments I realize that keeping up with customers that have a fast ops tempo and shifting focus can be a challenge. For that reason, I strongly agree with the author on the value of constant interaction with the customer and stakeholders, continuous builds, on-going testing and integration, teams being given wide latitude to focus on developing solutions and managers focusing on removing impediments. However, the author claims that these and other practices he discusses are unique to an agile development environment.

In my view, agile development represents just one confluence of best practices identified over many years and under different labels, such as rapid prototyping, joint application development, spiral development, Rational Unified Process (RUP), etc. While the author discusses these and other methodologies, I think his comparisons and contrasts with agile development are superficial. RUP, in particular, is not given its due as being an "agile" process and project management framework that can be used on different kinds of software projects.

I'm more of a middle of the road person. I tend to blend the strengths of many different approaches and when I read something that maximizes its strengths while exaggerating the weaknesses of other approaches, I tend to be skeptical. From my own experience with dynamic customer environments, I wonder if the author's description of agile development would lend itself to an EFFICIENT discovery of complex requirements. What's more efficient and agile, trying to code to "vague" requirements and continually coming back to the customer saying, "Is this the rock you wanted?" or holding some JAD sessions, getting with subject matter experts and prototyping aspects of the system that are not clearly understood? I'm not sure the author's description of agile development adds anything new to previous techniques for clarifying vague requirements or discovering unspoken requirements. It just takes a team of analysts, developers and stakeholders willing to work closely together, whether it be in the Elaboration phase of a RUP-based project, the 1st or 2nd iteration phase on a rapid-prototyping project or (get this) even in the requirements analysis phase of a traditional life cycle project.

Also, to me, the notion of "stories", "epics" and "themes" represent unnecessarily relabeled and watered-down versions of more mature UML techniques that model system structure, behavior and human-system and system-to-system interaction. To his credit, the author did spend time discussing the application of use cases which are easily implmented graphically and textually in UML.

While the author does bring together a number of concepts that are useful for running a project, he doesn't make the case that agile development, as a whole, is a major departure from conventional practices, but I like adding some of the "tools" he discussed to my toolbelt.

About the Author
Martin Murray was a respected Logistics consultant and worked with IBM for more than 15 years. He joined the computer industry upon his graduation from Middlesex University in 1986. In 1991, he began working with SAP R/2 in the materials management are for a London-based multinational beverage company, and in 1994 he moved to the United States to work as an SAP R/3 consultant.

Jawad Akhtar works as the SAP Leader for Business Sales and Delivery at IBM Pakistan. He earned a chemical engineering degree from Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA) in 1996. He has more than 18 years of professional experience and has completed several large-scale SAP implementations and rollout lifecycles. He has led large teams in his roles as an SAP integration manager and SAP project manager, and has also been proactively involved in business development and solution architect roles. He is the technical adviser to SAPexperts and is a prolific contributor to SearchSAP, where he shares his views on logistics, supply chain management (SCM), product lifecycle management (PLM), and project management.

Good overview, but lacks in informing / demonstrating how the user can interact more effectively with SAP

The authors provide a very cursory review of the basic functions of SAP MM module.
The physical properties of the book - the typeset is excellent, pages made of thick paper stock, bold, easy to read high contract. The writing style, for the most part, is very clear and precise; written in neutral, third person, thereby saving the reader from weeding out several thousand useless "you" "and "your" or "yours" and the other useless words that would accompany them. Comparing its style to the computer book genre in general, it is well written.
Screen shots and tables are very clear and also easy to read.
The business cases offered to demonstrate the practical application of the concept discussed are repetitious, shallow and add generally very little to reinforce the user's knowledge or proficiency.
The value of this book could have been enhanced by availing to the reader/user knowledge on how to interact with SAP in a typical environment, for example, showing how to execute the various transaction codes identified in the book, how to generate various user reports, how to perform tasks more effectively and efficiently, such as basic reports, queries, programmed reports, mass uploads, mass changes, etc.
The book will definitely increase the readers knowledge of SAP, thus buying and reading it was definitely a worthwhile investment in resources, however, it will not be serve me as a handbook which I intend to consult on regular basis.

Anyone can build the skill of relieving stress with this wonderful tool collection. The tools are explained in a direct, practical style so you don't have to wade through a lot of babble. And there's plenty of choice so you can find tools you're comfortable with. Perfect book for parents, with clear tools for family stress and work-life balance. I especially liked the section on "scheduling downtime" (otherwise it won't happen except via old default habits) and the section on "troubleshooting" (when you make changes, it doesn't work immediately so here are some follow-up steps). This is a book you could easily share with co-workers and family members.

Throughout World War II, cartoonist Bill Mauldin documented the adventures and misadventures of dogfaces Willie and Joe, symbols of the hard-pressed infantry, "the group which gives more and gets less than anybody else." In Up Front, recently reissued as a 50th-anniversary volume, Mauldin joins an absorbing narrative account of just how hellish combat is to a selection of those cartoons. Reading through this powerful book, one sees why Mauldin, in demythologizing the war, was often accused of undoing the efforts of the morale officers and politicians who assured the home front that our boys were having a fine time of it in Europe. Reprised here is the classic saga of Willie and Joe, Mauldin's GI "dogfaces" who slogged their way through cartoons set in Italy and France. For frontline black humor, the pair's war-weary image--slouched shoulders, dented helmets, torn uniforms, month-old beards, booze bottle in hand--combined with Mauldin's starkly angular, expressionistic shading and mordant captions yielded an ineffable effect matched by no other illustrator in World War II. He drew them originally for Stars and Stripes, the U.S. Army's newspaper, and many a picture annoyed top brass who wanted to censor him for tweaking the officers' nai{‹}vete{‚}about combat or their privileges in rear areas. He wrote the text for folks back home, explaining the background of incidents inspiring his black-and-white palette, and trenchantly sketched out the character of the average infantryman fighting the great crusade. Superb volume of cartoons created in the trenches of WWII

There were at least seven printings in 1945 of Bill Mauldin's UP FRONT-- my copy is from the 7th run.

On page one of the book, Mauldin claims to not be a writer and that his text is primarily an attempt to explain how the 160 single panel cartoons reproduced here came to exist. Mauldin is easily as fine an author as artist. This unchaptered book presents a unique soldier's-view perspective of the last two momentous years of the war in Europe.

Twenty-two year-old Mauldin traveled as newspaper correspondent with the 45th Infantry Division on the Sicily invasion and Italian campaign. By then he was contributing to STARS AND STRIPES. The cartoon character Willie was based on Bill's friend Irving Richtel, and Willie's buddy Joe was an amalgam of typical G.I.s.

In early '44, Mauldin was given his own jeep to further material-gathering; he created 6 cartoons a week for the soldiers' paper. Career officers found Mauldin's work offensive-- George Patton even threatened to "throw his a-- in jail" when Bill lampooned the General's order that all men were to be clean-shaven. Only the intervention of ETO commander Gen. Eisenhower kept Mauldin from incarceration.

None of that controversy appears in UP FRONT, nor do Mauldin's personal exploits: landing at Anzio, being wounded, promotion to sergeant. What is here however are the many cartoons that helped struggling soldiers maintain their sanity under extremely stressful conditions. It's little wonder then that this fine book went through so many reprintings during its first year of existence.

Bill Mauldin co-starred (as "The Loud Soldier") with WWII hero Audie Murphy in John Ford's THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE. Camera techniques used in this 1951 movie based on Stephen Crane's Civil War novel are remarkably modern and the story is well-told and acted by all. (VHS edition) (DVD edition)

ANDRZEJ M. TRZYNADLOWSKI is Professor at the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno. A very good Introduction to Modern Power Electronics

This book introduces the often esoteric subject of power electronic conversion via a sensible and simple generic switching converter and goes on to include a very comprehensive coverage of modern conversion circuit topologies and modern devices. This book does not 'tangent' off into extraneous detail which is the quagmire which bogs students down in this subject, but maintains a very equitable intellectual level throughout. Inclusion of numerous SPICE files of typical power conversion circuits is also particularly valuable. Most students nowadays accept SPICE for modelling low power electronic circuitry so why not power electronic circuitry also.
This book will be valuable to all with an interest in power electronics but especially to undergraduates, as it is one of the least intimidating texts I have ever encountered in the interesting but 'oft' shied clear of' subject of power electronics.

An outstanding text

I have used this book as a main text book for about three years. I found it ideal for one semester power electronics course due to its level of details, excellent sequence of the subjects, modern approach, logical and simple notation set, and the number of worked examples and problems. I wish to encourege the author to write a second edition in which he may add software applications, and to be promoted -by the publisher- as a text book.
