Rowling herself describes the result as ‘slavishly thorough’ and ‘mind-boggling,’ and professes to be ‘humbled and deeply flattered’ by it. Most might see the uses of this type of work as professional (for auctioneers) or financial (for collectors). But one may also chart textual changes, illustration history, or marketing practices of the series, thanks to the significant level of detail used for each edition of each work. Serious academic bibliography, not a fan title

This is a serious academic bibliography of J. K. Rowling's publications in Great Britain and America. Every edition is listed, with publication details. There are some behind the scenes details from her agents and her various publishers, but this is not a book for the casual fan. Also, it is a book completely unsuited to any ebook reader; either get the hardcopy version or don't buy it at all. It's a must if you collect Rowling editions or need to distinguish between 1st and 2nd printings of any title, but it is not a 'reader's' book. It is a reference for academics and booksellers. Or hardcore fanatics. If you are interested in J.K. Rowling the publishing phenomenon or collect everything Harry Potter, this is the book for you. Otherwise, don't bother.

Beautiful literature deserves serious study

I couldn't wait for the US release of the hardcover book so I ordered it from Amazon UK. It arrived today, and I am not disappointed. This is NOT a book about Harry Potter. It is a literary study of JK Rowling's writings from the first Harry Potter book through Cuckoo's Calling, and discusses every edition of each book and her secondary writings as well. It could be (and I'm sure will be) a college textbook, even though it contains many previously unknown and very interesting facts about how the Harry Potter series came into being. If you think as I do, that JK Rowling is an author for the ages, this book will give you invaluable insight into her body of work through 2013. Great writers keep writing, and personally I'm glad that Jo isn't finished yet.

I didn't want a Kindle version of this one. I wanted the ink and paper version to read and keep as a permanent addition to my library. I was prepared to pay the US price for it, but to my amazement it was cheaper by 20% on the UK site - shipping included. Simply put, it's a beautiful book. Well done Mr. Errington!

Invaluable Scholarship

I find it amusing that people are railing against this publication 1) for it's price and/or 2) because it isn't what they thought it was going to be. Those who don't know what a bibliography is should look the word up in a dictionary. (On the other hand, anyone ignorant of what a bibliography is probably doesn't even own a dictionary.) Those who don't choose to buy the book because of the price are welcome not to do so. But to give it a low rating never having owned or read it is unfair to the author and publishers. And just plain tacky. This is a reference book, plain and simple. It's an invaluable resource for the J.K. Rowling scholar, and nothing more. Don't buy it looking for HP fiction or secrets hitherto unearthed. This is NOT the HP encyclopedia Rowling herself has hinted at writing. It is what it is and should be appreciated -- and reviewed -- as such.

About the Author
My name is Ellen Cross, and I am proud to have been welcomed aboard the eXtasy team.
My first release, "Last Chances" was released on the 1st of October, and I have a Christmas release "Holly's Healing" due for release in December.

I am a mum of five kids, aged from five to sixteen. And now for the punch
line...they are all boys!
I live in a little beachside town in northern NSW, Australia, with my hubby of
fifteen years, my boys, and my slightly mentally unstable yet completely lovable dog, Jessie.
I worked as a computer data entry analyst until my first son was born at just
twenty-eight weeks gestation, and life hasn't been the same since! I love my music, and am completely addicted to my ereader.

I have a love of all genre's, particularly paranormal and sci-fi, and write
within each. I especially love the underdog...the characters who think they are
unworthy, or have been cast aside as being undeserving of love. They will not
only find a home within my books, but find their happily ever after as well.

I have several books in the works, and hope to share the news of their impending releases in time as well.

Two people find themselves completely devastated by circumstances and deceit. Then find each other and dreams come true. Could this ever really happen? Probably not. But, wouldn't it be wonderful if it could?

Original Premise, Fun Read

Jen is carrying twins as a surrogate mother for her sister, Annie, who couldn't conceive, but after Annie is killed in a car crash, Jen is left to cope with the loss of her beloved sister. I found Jen to be a very likeable character. I really empathized with her loss and especially in the midst of that having to deal with her sister's angry, blaming husband who wants no involvement in the soon-to-be-born twins' lives.

Garrick is a cancer survivor about to be cheated out of his father's company by a jealous brother. Garrick is very sensitive man, which is a breath of fresh air after the overused "bad boys" that I see too often in romance. Occasionally, Garrick's behavior does not fit what I would expect for "man"behavior (too much talking, mostly).

The two are brought together by well meaning friends who hope the two will help each other mend. I don't want to be spoiler of what happens in the rest of the story :) I found the premise unique, the author's writing style fresh, the story entertaining, and look forward to reading more books by Ellen Cross.

I read this in nearly one sitting, I couldn't put it down. This is a fantastic debut for Ellen, it was a truly beautiful love story. I added it to my favorites, because I will definitely read it again.

Useful for anyone in sustainability/environmental field

Rose, Chris (2010) How to Win Campaigns: Communications for Change, Second Edition. London, UK: Earthscan
It can be instructive to view your work through a different lens. This book is about setting up and managing campaigns, and most of the examples deal with environmental problems, so the topic is very relevant to sustainability professionals. While you may not be working for an NGO that is planning a major campaign, the lessons in this book are still quite useful. Campaigns are defined as a conversation with society, with the goal of persuading large numbers of people to act with urgency, without having to make friends first. (p. 1) Some of the main lessons I took away:
Campaigns as a story--you don't want to reveal the ending to the story when you start, even if you have a clear vision of what you want the ending to be. On page 20, there is a visual that explains the flow of a campaign using broad phases: Awareness, Alignment, Engagement, Action So you start by identifying problem, perhaps an enemy or victim, then a solution, the call to action. Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, the public has to go on the journey. You can't start the story by telling them they just have to click their heels to get what they want or they won't go on the journey with you.
The importance of events and images--Campaigns are organized around events, in part to draw media attention. There is a whole chapter on managing the media and that too is an interesting example of story-telling where the reporters have (perhaps subconsciously) certain archetypical stories that their reporting quickly falls into; and if you're not careful in communication, they can be telling a completely different story than the one you intended. Rose provides an interesting example of this with campaigns of fishing quotas. Photographs of bulging nets can be viewed by the public in contradictory ways: as positive (there are still lots of fish, what's the fuss about?) or negative (we're raping the seas). The debate is esoteric with arguments by scientists and pressure groups on the health of the stocks. Suddenly the fishermen become the victims as talk of quotas emerge. And politicians use this as political theater while they play their cards to see if their nation can come out on top. While the fish are really the victim, what tends to be picked up by the media is the battle between the parties. Declining fish stocks become a distant memory while the power struggle story takes over.
Visual language--Rose emphasizes that you're better off creating an image more than language because they are less subject to reframing and work to set up the shot so that it tells an iconic story we'll quickly recognize. Remember the man in Tiananmen Square standing in front of the tank? David and Goliath. We instantly know whose side to be on.
Interview `suitcase'--If you're going into an interview, the book provides a step by step process for preparing your communication: a headline (the main thing you want to say); three reasons supporting the headline (that answer the question, Why?); and then one fact to go with each reason (preferably a number); finally anecdotes (which brings it to life). Rose also provides appropriate bridges for when the interviewer asks a question which isn't directly related to the points you want to make. He says it's rude to ignore the question (as we see politicians do all the time) but instead to acknowledge it and get back on track. EG, "That's an issue but what the public is really concerned about is..."
Fundraising--Keep it simple. Usually campaigns give people one option but different levels of support (eg buy a seat or table at the event).
The importance of solutions--Problems quickly become demotivating. We're all overwhelmed with negative news. "Start campaign planning with an opportunity to take action and work back from it." This may mean not taking on the problem (eg climate change) head on but rather one little piece.

All these principles apply equally well to sustainability practitioners trying to make the business case for something they want to do.

The vocab is not a good match with what my students have been exposed to so far or will be exposed to this year. Then it becomes too simple for students in second grade.

My daughter had this too say about Leo et Lea Jouent au Jeu des Contraires, "This was a wonderful book. thank You for the book. Please can you make more Leo et Lea French books?" I agree with her! This was a really fun and simple way to expand her French vocabulary. Wish there were more on Kindle...we would have them all!

Dreadful

Errol Barrow was the Barbados Prime Minister, not Earl Barrow as Sylvia Hampton renames him - Marion Anderson's accompanist Blanche Burton-Lyles was the first African American to graduate from the Curtis Institute,not Marion Anderson herself. Sloppy research - these were real events, which were important in the life of Ms. Simone.

As someone who came to know Ms. Simone's music first through her CD's and then by watching various clips on youtube and reading articles, etc posted on the net, I can truly say I learned more from youtube and google than from this book.

A fan's perspective of the artist

Most of the reviews here seem to miss something important about this book -- it is two FANS' account of their friendship with soul/jazz/folk goddess Nina Simone. It is not meant to be a definitive biography of Nina. And since the authors were friends with Nina, the personal stories did not seem out of place to me. No, this book does not paint a perfect portrait of Nina. The authors do not gloss over her faults. Nina Simone was a deeply troubled woman, and this book reflects that. I appreciated the honesty. I also liked the fact that it has more information about Nina's music than does her autobiography. It's a good companion volume, and well worth the money.

Well I bought the book on publication - yes I have read it twice. The second time with every greater irritation. Who is this book about Miss Simone or Miss Hampton? Miss Simone I want to learn more about - Miss Hampton, you guessed it - NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure there are some new angles and insights on this complex diva, but it is not a great read - I wonder if any of Nina's family aside from Lisa had any input. Nina's brother, Sam Waymon, is mentioned but I would guess not sought as a source of information - hell this guy was in Nina's band in the mid 60s and early 70s. The only mention seems to be the rather gratuitous mention about a trip to a gay club!!!

Nina's autobigraphy "I Put A Spell On You", remains the definitive read, so far. If only there was an Ian Carr, Paul Tingen or John Szwed who made such worthy contributions to our undrerstanding of Miles Davis who would do the same for Miss Simone. Her memory deserves a better more in depth analysis of probably the most influential singer and spokeswoman for humanity, equality and womens rights in the 20th century.

Save your cash (avoid this book) and wait another day for the definitive study of this truely remarkable lady and artist.

the actual pilgrimage

The authors rode Run For The Wall 3 years in a row, the first year to participate, the 2nd for perspective, comparing 1st and 2nd Run, then the third with a book in mind, getting to know riders and leadership, interviewing and transparently documenting their experience.

Whether you protested during the Vietnam War, served in the military or left the country, Run For The Wall, is a book to read. It was published in 2001, but reading it 10 years later is even more poignant, because the authors foresaw the future of the Run, and all things considered what they predicted, fell into place.

Some features of the book are the day to day riding details. The children at the Rainelle Elementary School, the support at the Wall that riders show each other, the leadership techniques, snags, turmoils and the incredible ability to pull off the event one more time considering. The establishment of a Board of Director's after 8 or 9 years of a "folk-style" peer-to-peer "good-ole-boy" process of leadership selection.

A great read for anyone who knows a veteran. The "Welcome Home" theme is encouraging, moving emotionally, and stressed as a necessity to understand the 60's and 70's.

About the Author
Tomer is Head of User Experience at WeWork in New York City leading a team that designs work and living spaces, communities, and services around the world. Formerly a senior user experience researcher at Google Search, Tomer is the author of the book, Validating Product Ideas through Lean User Research (2016) and author of, It's Our Research: Getting stakeholder buy-in for user experience research projects (2012). He founded and led The Israeli Chapter of the User Experience Professionals Association and has been preaching and teaching UX at Google's LaunchPad program, a bootcamp for early-stage startups around the world, in conferences, and at Treehouse and General Assembly. Tomer holds a master's degree in Human Factors in Information Design from Bentley University in Waltham, MA. He is @tsharon on Twitter and Instagram.

Ask the right questions and better articulate why they are important

All too often with projects I join UX has been an afterthought and, directly as a result, things are not moving forward and there's no clear strategy/vision. Earlier this year someone told me the following: "We haven't had a UX person on this yet because we wanted to keep it simple". I think about these words a lot and this book, to me, speaks directly to why this type of (unfortunately common) thinking makes no sense and how to integrate UX correctly from the start.

It's organized in such a way that promotes the reader to absorb the information in select bits as needed over requiring cover to cover consumption and that just so happens to be my favorite way to read design books. I need to be able to get information as it's relevant to me, otherwise it's impossible to retain. I also adore that each proposed stakeholder question is followed by a "Why Is This Question Important?" section to really drive the point home but also better prepare you for inevitable client pushback.

So much of the job is asking the right questions and this book speaks directly to what questions to ask and why, as well as what to do with the answers.

It is a must read book for any Startup Founder or Product Manager. In fact it must be on the table of anyone who are developing any idea.
It not only show how to answer questions to validate your product, but also provide step-by-step instructions of how to apply it for your product.

I wish I have read this book years ago, it would save me a lot of time.
Highly recommended if you are creating something.

If you don't have the budget for a formal user-testing process, then the applicability of what Tomer presents is essential. This is not a manifesto or theoretical treatise - this is a how-to booked packed with resources and tools to get effective user research results without spending millions of dollars.

About the Author

Nigel Evans is Assistant Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Business and Law at Teeside University. He has published widely in tourism and management and taught strategy for many years on varied programmes including MBA and BA (Hons) Travel and Tourism programmes at Teeside and Northumbria Universities.
