If you are searching for some kind of answer

I found this book several years ago, at a time in my life when I was unsure about what to believe in. I had certain beliefs on what afterlife, but I was still searching. I came upon this book because of the author, and I have to say that this book not only changed my outlook on relationships, it changed my life, period. I found myself not only understanding current and past relationships I had had, but WHY I chose them. It made me have a completely different understanding on those I loved or disliked. It also gave me the realisation that hate was a useless emotion.

Although this book doesn't hold ALL the answers, it supplies the reader with the means by which they can heal old wounds, and learn that LOVE is the only answer. When I have a friend or loved one that is searching for answers, I gift them this book.

Finally, there are some people - including ones she is close to - who know the whole story and will stop at nothing to make sure it stays buried forever.

I really liked this book!

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend. It's not my usual genre, and I doubt I would've picked it up on my own. I'm glad I stepped out of my box!

The first thing that struck me in the book was the humanization of the literal "skeleton in the closet." Even though this is a decades old mystery, the main character recognizes that this corpse was once someone's child, and is impacted by the relevance to her life and family. She undertakes to solve the mystery to bring closure and peace to an unidentified victim.

Another aspect of the book that I felt was outstanding was the method of detection. The main character doesn't brandish a weapon or suddenly become a karate master, but uses her prosaic research skills to unearth the solution a piece at a time. I was able to believe that this civilian with these skills could plausibly solve the mystery- no suspension of disbelief needed.

All in all, I would be excited to read another book by Ms Stein, which is the highest compliment I can give.

A strong sense of place

First Line: It began with a sobbing phone call from my daughter, the kind of call every parent dreads.

Erica Donato's teenage daughter, Chris, has been helping the contractor with the renovations on their old Brooklyn brownstone. She calls her mother in hysteria because she just found a skeleton when tearing down an old wall. The skeleton is of a young girl, and from the looks of the other items with her, she's been holding her teddy bear since sometime in the 1970s.

The police seem to think that Erica and Chris should have no interest in this long-dead girl, but Chris becomes increasingly focused on learning her identity. When the house is broken into, Erica-- a young widow and over-age history Ph.D candidate who's an intern in a local history museum-- sends her daughter off to art camp to get her out of harm's way. But it becomes crystal clear that, as much as Chris wants the young girl identified, someone else is willing to kill to keep the dead girl a Jane Doe.

This book has a fascinating setting, letting us get to know both present-day Brooklyn as well as some of its colorful history, and I also enjoyed reading about the work Erica does for the local museum. The cast of characters is colorful, especially the grumpy old reporter who reluctantly decides to help Erica in her search for information about the girl. Erica's daughter Chris is a typical teenager awash in hormones. From one paragraph to the next, you never know when it's time to hug her to bits... or to pretend that she's temporarily insane.

For all its strengths, however, I had two problems with Brooklyn Bones. One concerns the mystery itself. I had a difficult time believing that the bad guys would go to such extremes to cover up an old crime when the police didn't seem to be all that interested in solving it.

The second problem I had is with the main character herself. Although her behavior is often summed up as "the Brooklyn coming out in her," it usually felt more like a flaky sort of bravado-- over the top, often ill-advised, and sometimes inappropriate. Since I don't know anyone from Brooklyn, this behavior of Erica's may be right on the money, but I do have my doubts. However, I did want to shake her until her teeth rattled over one thing in particular. Her house had been broken into, someone close to her had been murdered, and a family friend had insisted that Chris be sent to art camp to get her out of harm's way. So what does she do when Chris wants to come home for a few days in the middle of all this? Erica lets her come back! The "female in jeopardy" scenario (often referred to as "fem jep") where a female stupidly puts her life in danger (or in this case, her daughter's life) is one that I do not like, and I liked it even less in this book since it involved a mother dealing with her child's safety.

All that being said, I did find a lot to like about this book, and I'm curious to read the next book in the series. Hopefully Erica will part ways with the dreaded fem jep!

Solid debut with strong sense of home

Erica Donato is making a life for herself and her daughter, going to grad school, working part-time in a museum and renovating their Park Slope home. She misses her husband, who died too young, but she treasures her friends and family. What was a quiet life is shattered when the renovaters, including her daughter, discover the bones of a teenage girl, cradling a teddy bear, hidden in a wall of the house.

Soon, Erica and her teenage daughter, Chris, are encountering strangers threatening them in the street and on the phone. Retired cop Rick Malone, friend of Erica's father, has been a surrogate parent to both of them, but now he's not answering phone messages.

Meanwhile, Erica's friend introduces her to dashing and rich Steven Richmond, who offers her consulting work. He represents developers who want to be highly regarded when they change the neighborhood. Erica is not certain how her historian credentials work into this, but as a grad student and single mother welcomes the extra money to look up material about where she lives. The search is also to try to find out about the early 1970s, when that girl's remains were walled up inside Erica's home.

To help with the historical record, Erica befriends a crochety retired newspaper reporter who broke stories about the gentrification of part of Brooklyn. Leary's old clippings and notes of the days when runaways crashed in Park Slope homes and landlords wanted them out are interesting not just to Erica the historian and homeowner where a skeleton was found, they also attract the attention of those who may not want the past brought to light.

Stein does well in setting up both the main characters -- Erica and her daughter, their friend Joe, the contractor who is renovating the house, and other characters -- and the whodunit. There are times when the story threatens to veer into romance rather than mystery, but it's intentional for both the plot and for the character development of Erica the young widow. The groundwork laid in this novel should provide a sturdy foundation to further books in the series.

One area in which Stein particular excels is in bringing Erica's Brooklyn neighborhood to life. Readers see what it was like back in the day, as well as the vibrant district it is now. Families have roots of several generations or as newcomers make a block their own. The interactions play a key role in solving the mystery of the skeletal remains, but also show what makes Brooklyn a special place to the author and her main character.

About a year ago, the media reported that the Pentagon had been training and using psychic spies, operatives who garnered information through "remote viewing." According to Morehouse, the media reports arose from a disinformation campaign conducted by the CIA in cooperation with the Defense Intelligence Agency. Here, Morehouse, a former highly decorated army officer?and psychic spy in the Star Gate program?purports to tell the real story and his role in it. Morehouse, we learn, became a psychic literally by accident. He was serving with the infantry in Jordan when he was knocked out by a stray bullet that hit his helmet; afterward, he saw strange visions and experienced out-of-body episodes. Instead of recommending psychiatric treatment, the army placed Morehouse in a top secret program in which agents psychically travel to far-flung sites to "view" prisons, airplane-crash locations and the like. Morehouse's descriptions of his psychic trips are the strength of this book. Most combine mystery and suspense so skillfully that he makes perfectly believable the notion that he "visited" a friend who had been killed in an air crash. But some of his "trips," such as the time-warp call at the burial site of the lost Ark of the Covenant, seem less authentic, though they're equally entertaining. For all the detail in his recounting of his remote-viewing incidents, Morehouse's narrative leaves gaps and unanswered questions, including exactly how the viewing process works, and the Star Gate program's exact provenance. Readers may need to do some remote viewing of their own to fill in the blanks, but overall this is a dramatic tale told with flair. Photos not seen by PW.

A spooky journey in the eyes of a soldier.

This was an excellent read by Dr. Morehouse. I'll admit that the writing style was not fluid, but I dont think the book is intended to be a literary masterpiece. This man is a soldier who encountered something lifechanging. The most astonishing part of the book was the account in where he and another viewer were on a doomed flight and encountered the souls of the suprised passengers who JUST DIED. He non chalantly described this and the book dropped from my hands. He also makes mention to the existance of God and the Ark of the Covenant. This is a good book by a good man. Dr Morehouse, if you are reading this, I want to thank you for your bravery and candor. Also, from one soldier to another, you dont need bars on your soldier to have honor and integrity. Well done. I wished you went into more detail about the "realm of decievers" you mentioned.

What a relief to read this book! I had already known through my own experiences it was real but to see someone else risk so much to bring it out in the air as legitimate and reveal that it as being used by people other than those practicing "spiritual" values so they can exploit it, was very powerful to me and greatly appreciated. The techniques he details are also helpful. A GREAT BOOK! PICK OF THE LITTER FOR HONEST INFORMATION on what the government is doing and what you can be doing!

A Tour De Force

Russell Targ, states in the preface of this book that his grief over the untimely death of his daughter Elisabeth prompted him to examine more deeply the nature of his own suffering. The result is a tour de force. I don't say this lightly. Nor do I say this simply because Russell is my friend. The truth is that Russell Targ is a man of enormous gravity. Long before we developed a friendship, I admired him from a distance.

I should explain that Russell Targ is one of the most successful parapsychology researchers in the history of the field. He has an extraordinary gift of allowing the psychic talents of other people to flourish in his presence. And, he has had the wherewithal to conduct well-controlled studies published in mainstream scientific journals. He is one of the acknowledged founders of the flourishing field that is now known as "remote viewing." He conducted the first published, scientific research with the famous Israeli psychic Uri Geller. He persuaded the U.S. government to invest millions of dollars in parapsychological research.

These are awesome scientific accomplishments in the field of parapsychology. I would predict that hundreds of years from now students will be studying Russell Targ's scientific papers.

But, the point of The End of Suffering, is far more profound than Targ's scientific achievements. In fact, Targ makes clear that -- to the extent he identifies himself with the famous, pioneer parapsychologist -- he is dooming himself to a life of ego-attachment. This, he claims is the basis of all unnecessary suffering.

A large part of this book is a cogent presentation of some esoteric aspects of Buddhism that few westerners ever approach. Especially important is the non-dualistic, madhyamika philosophy of the second century philosopher Nagarjuna. Targ (and his co-author J. J. Hurtak) elucidate with great clarity the distinctions between the dualistic Aristotelian thinking that has permeated western culture and the four-valued logic of Nagarjuna. But, this is not merely an exercise in the history of philosophy. It is a exploration of the psychological implications of these philosophies in modern life.

A major highlight of the book, for me, was then how the venerable teachings of Nagarjuna are shown to be consistent with the empirical findings in a variety of contemporary sciences: particularly parapsychology and physics -- but also modern medicine. And, another highlight, are the many well-known examples from popular culture (miserable lifestyles of the rich and famous) that reinforce further the pitfalls of ego-attachment to one's "story."

Yet, another highlight, for me, was the discussion of Vajrayana or Dzogchen Buddhism. Like many others, I have thought of Buddhism as composed of two major schools -- the Hinayana (or "small vehicle" based on the original Buddhist teachings) and the Mahayana (or "large vehicle" based on the notion of the compassionate Boddhisatva). Vajrayana, the third school, involves letting go of all conditioning -- including the conditioning of one's earlier training.

This book exemplifies the integration of spiritual truths with scientific facts culminating in a pragmatic, psychological approach to a life that works. I highly recommend it.

This is a beautiful, profound book written by one of the greatest teachers of non local reality of our time. Russell is not afraid of suffering, and, notably, he teaches us how to give up our fear too. This book and Russell embody a precious humanity and purpose that is so scarce in our culture which is so wrought with psychobabble. I recommend this book to everyone who is brave enough to delve into their lives and hearts to experience freedom.

Russell Targ, a physicist as well as paranormal researcher, and J. J. Hurtak, a Judeo-Christian and Buddhist spiritual teacher have written a book of great importance for the rest of us. As they suggest, it is today because we have leaders that are ignorant about our oneness with not only each other but the Creator, they make absurd statements that actually lead to war and untold suffering such as, "Those who are not with us are with the terrorists." The modern physics of nonlocality and remote viewing research all show our potential for experiencing expanded awareness that yield to a deeper understanding of why avatars like Jesus uttered: "If you see me, you have seen God." More so, these authors speak to why the Dalai Lama described Nagarjuna as one of the truly enlightened people of all times and places. Thus, Targ and Hurtak describe a peaceful and joyful path based on these teachings and graciously share them with all who have ears to hear and eyes to see this ultimate truth: "We are one global human being" as the shamans themselves declare worldwide. The Maya priest-shaman use the word "In La'kech," that translates as this profound realization in English, "I am another yourself."
