Beginning in 1881 and continuing to 1906, Ambrose Bierce created a series of sardonic word definitions of his own. Many of these were collected and published as The Cynic's Word Book, which he later protested was "a name which the author had not the power to reject or happiness to approve." So in 1911, he pulled together a collection that was more to his own liking and called it The Devil's Dictionary. The entries are a tad uneven in quality, but most are amusing and some are great. Each reader will have his own favorites, some of mine are as follows : ACQUAINTANCE, n. A person whom we know well enough to borrow from, but not well enough to lend to. A degree of friendship called slight when its object is poor or obscure, and intimate when he is rich or famous. ALLIANCE, n. In international politics, the union of two thieves who have their hands so deeply inserted in each other's pockets that they cannot separately plunder a third. BIGOT, n. One who is obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain. BORE, n. A person who talks when you wish him to listen. CONSULT, v.i. To seek another's disapproval of a course already decided on. CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision. DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work. DISCRIMINATE, v.i. To note the particulars in which one person or thing is, if possible, more objectionable than another. EDUCATION, n. That which discloses to the wise and disguises from the foolish their lack of understanding. FUTURE, n. I'd skip this and purchase the UNABRIDGED version. Some of the definitions left out in this version are among Bierce's best. Also, the complete work is not so long: no reason to abridge something that in full length is only 100 or so pages long.

When I first presumed Utsubora to be some sort of lip-service homage to Murakami, I was only seeing plot points and thriller tropes. I thought Nakamura’s book would merely be an amusing ride. About the Author
Born in 1979, Asumiko Nakamura is one of Japan's hidden gems. The artist has penned more than 15 titles since 2002 and has reached critical acclaim for her sensitive protrayals of romantic narratives featuring a wide range of characters - men and women, young and old. Utsubora - Story of a Plagiarist

To an author, to write is to live. What happens if you can no longer write? What then, is life?

When I first came across this book, I knew nothing about it nor its author, Asumiko Nakamura. The cover art alone intrigued me enough to want to pick it up, and I'm glad I did. The art on the inside was off-putting to me at first because because the characters, especially the male ones, looked like typical Yaoi or Shonen Ai character designs. Which means that they may be shown to sometimes have unusual, broad shoulders, be incredibly handsome in the face, or suffer from Yaoi basketball hands. The male characters may have some visual tropes from those more erotic comics but the women are also drawn very beautifully. With that said, it would be really unfair to judge this book by character design preferences because there are a lot of good things going for this book.

As the title of the book implies, Utsubora is the story of a novelist. The main focus of the story is about an author and what happens to him when he succumbs to the lows of plagiarism. Filled with mystery, drama, and sensuality, Utsubora is a fun read. In the end, Utsubora is also a smart book that will have you guessing what exactly is going on with the cast of characters in the book.

At the end of the book, there are some extras. Including an Illustration Story and Translator Notes. I really appreciated the translator's notes segment because it included interesting, informative cultural facts of things seen in the story and its the closest you can get for having commentary for a book. I feel this really adds to the cultural understanding of modern Japan.

Utsubora is Asumiko Nakamura's first book published in English, and I enjoyed the book enough that I would definitely pick up another book by her if it were ever published.

Recently released in North America in a single, thick volume by Vertical Inc, Utsubora is definitely worth checking out.

First off, you'll be impressed by Nakamura's command with a pen. Her style blends manga, art-nouveau (Beardsley in particular), and ukiyo-e into a cohesive, seductive style that is all her own. The story is a tale of publishing, plagiarism and obsession, which is unfortunately difficult to follow due to the way the text is doled out slowly in small speech balloons. The tiny balloons work in Japanese, but aren't big enough for lengthy English words. If you are willing to overlook this issue, the title is well worth spending time with. Let's support this book so more of Nakamura's work can be translated.

fantastic Manga Mystery

First, I applaud Vertical Inc for taking a chance on "utsubora". There aren't any ninjas, giant robots or super powered aliens here. Instead, Nakamura has crafted an intense mystery "whodunnit" around the death/murder of a novelist. The artwork is minimal, solid and striking as we are taken on a journey to find out who the killer is and how all the players are involved. In the story Mizorogi Jun is a writer who unable to come up with a new book steals a novel from a friend. he soons finds himself as a suspect when the girl is found dead. I don't want to say too much so this review is vague. The mystery gets deeper when we realise the deceased author had a twin sister and Mizorogi actually enters into an affair with the sister.

This a great stand alone work and really worth the purchase.

Science writer Emsley (Cambridge Univ.) and physician Fell (Director of the Oxford Allergy Center) define food allergy as the immune systems reaction to either a particular food (usually a form of protein such as eggs or peanuts) or an environmental agent that is out of proportion to the amount of the substance ingested. Intolerance, on the other hand, ``is caused by the body's inability to detoxify certain components in food''there is no immune system involvement, just a substance ingested that acts like a poison. Some intolerances are to a nutrient like lactose that an individual lacks the enzyme to process, some to non-nutrients such as sulfites or MSG (these latter occurring either as part of processing, or by contamination). Although the focus throughout is on presenting sound scientific information, Emsley and Fell organize their material in a way that makes it possible to sort out a possible food sensitivity: The common culprits are toxins, biogenic amines, salicylates, caffeine, sulfur dioxide and sulfites, and the big one, alcohol (``moderately poisonous, but such is the pleasure derived from drinking it'' that we ignore the facts and suffer the consequences). I have a sensitivity to salicylates - aspirin and certain foods. After discovering this fact two to three weeks ago, I have done a lot of research to determine what I should eat and what I should avoid. This book contains the best info I have found to help me in this regard. There is an entire chapter on Salicylates and rather than just a list of foods considered Safe, Low, High, etc., this book has a 2-page Reference Table with salicylate content of foods per 100 g, typical portion, and salicylate intake in mg. Very informative

This book presents a very informative introduction to foods that make people sick. The authors, a university chemistry professor and an allergist MD are quite knowledgeable. They present the mainstream scientific research on food intolerance in a way that is easy to comprehend for the general reader. Dr. Emsley's interest in chemistry is evident throughout the book as he explains the biochemistry of what happens to the food we put in our bodies as well as the chemistry behind food intolerance symptoms.
Emsley and Fell are very clear on what is a food allergy and what is not. They explain that a person is properly said to have an allergy to food only if his or her immune system is involved in a negative response, and that true food allergies are not very common. On the other hand, many other people, perhaps as many as 20%, are intolerant of certain foods. According to the authors, this intolerance is because they lack the ability to break down the food into usable chemical substances. Food intolerance can cause many of the same symptoms as food allergies, but it is also implicated in such problems as headaches or mood disorders; in rare occasions, food intolerance attacks can even be fatal.
With their definition of food intolerance as any situation where the body is overwhelmed by the chemicals in what has been consumed, the authors go beyond standard "problem foods" identified in other books on the topic (such as biogenic amines, salicylates, and sulfites). For example, they discuss how alcohol is broken down chemically in the body, and the chemistry behind drunkenness and hangovers. They also discuss the toxins involved in food poisoning, a very extreme type of intolerance reaction that everyone is susceptible to.
Overall, I found this book highly informative, much more so than books that lump all food problems into the allergy category. The book includes a brief guide to nutrition and food for a healthy lifestyle, but these sections seem almost an afterthought. The book doesn't include a special diet or treatment plan. Instead, its main strength is the scientific explanations of what happens in a food intolerance attack. I think it will go a long way towards helping me understand why I can nibble some foods, but not indulge freely. In general, it's great for patient information, but MDs and naturopaths may also find much of interest.

Robert O'Brien is Professor of Political Science at McMaster University, Canada. He has published books and articles on the subjects of international trade, global labour issues, social movements and international economic institutions, global social policy.

About the Author
Peter G. Tsouras is noted military historian and a leading writer of alternative history with 22 titles to his credit on subjects ranging from Alexander the Great to the American Civil War and the Second World War. He recently retired from the US Government as a senior intelligence officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency. He served with the 1st Battalion 64th Armor on active duty with the US Army and subsequently retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army Reserve. He was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia.

Spencer Jones teaches at the School of History and Cultures at the University of Birmingham, England.

Intriguing counterfactuals

Alternate histories run the risk of being fantasist literature. The ten scenarios presented here at least are plausible, if not always an alternative actually considered by contemporaries. Of course, the plausibility is enhanced by the authors' skill in writing narrative and their technical knowledge. The authors also make clear at the end of each scenario the degree of the departure from reality (in most of the scenarios, the departure is pretty small). The real value of the collection is in showing how the outcome of a battle -- and the war itself -- turned on seemingly obscure contingencies.

For those thinking about purchasing the book, I offer two observations:

-- The book will definitely enhance your understanding of the war. The book, however, is not for one who has only a passing acquaintance with the events of the war.

-- A recurring flaw in the recent flood of books about World War One is the execrable quality of the maps in the books. As for this book, I do not understand why all of the maps must be presented at the beginning of the book instead of being inserted near the beginning of each chapter. The authors' presentations, moreover, would have been more effective if they had included maps showing the alternate beginning and outcome described in each chapter and maps showing the actual beginning and result. And if you're using the Kindle app on a smartphone to read the book, the maps are worthless since you can't zoom in (or at least I was unable to do so). The text of the book would warrant 5 stars, but the maps, ostensibly there to aid the reader, fail so miserably in doing so that I can justify only 4 stars.

Fascinating look at how twists of fate could have changed World War I

It’s always interesting to discuss the “what if’s” of history. To make it outstanding, the story has to be plausible enough for the reader to believe. Peter Tsouras is a master of authoring this type of alternative history.

In “Over the Top”, Tsouras collaborates with Spencer Jones to explore decisions that would have had drastic effects on the outcome of World War I. In the first vignette, Tsouras describes an alternate history if Germany decided to attack east against the Russians instead of west against the French. Beyond the expected battles, Tsouras explores the international effects of various treaties.

Next, Spencer Jones describes the Battle of Ypres, and what could have happened if the Germans had pushed their luck against very thinly spread British lines.

Discussing alternative outcomes of Gallipoli, the failed British-led amphibious assault in Turkey, is a regular pass time of people who studied the Great War. Tsouras provides his perspective on what probably would have happened.

The Battle of Jutland, the greatest naval battle of World War I, is the subject of another of chapter from Jones.

What makes these each of these stories great is that they grab the reader’s interest. Despite very distinct writing styles, Tsouras and Jones both weave fascinating tales of what could have been. For readers unfamiliar with the actual outcomes of the historic vignettes, the authors end each chapter with an explanation of where fiction departed from fact. It was always a surprise to see how short these explanations really were. Just a simple twist of fate could have had vastly different strategic effects in most of these stories.

I agree that it was unusual seeing all of the map graphics presented at the beginning of the book. It would have been more logical to put the charts along with the associated chapters. The book also includes a number of period photographs from World War I.

I am an avid reader of history, but by no means am I an expert on World War I. I recognized the names of the battles, but couldn't describe in detail how any of them played out. Despite the danger in mixing fact and fiction, I absolutely loved the book and highly recommend it. It was an entertaining read.

A different take on counter-factual histories

A very fine discourse on what could have happened given a number of different scenarios of the Great War. It is both interesting and informative to contemplate the impact on modern history had this conflict ended differently. All too often many of the alternative histories
out there today focus on the "what ifs" of a different ending of WW2. A very thought-provoking work that is very timely to the celebration of the
100th anniversary of World War 1.

Quick Read. But lots of great story!

This is a quickie....hehehe. It's a short story that is jam packed with fun characters, witty dialog, and a hot sexy roommate. What could be better than that?? Lexi is one lucky girl. Don't let the length of this book discourage you. You still get the depth of the characters and a great story that will have you yelling at the author wanting more immediately!!! I am SOOO ready for Travis' story next!!!

I downloaded Roomies as a free novella from Amazon. While not horrible, this novella was redundant, re-using a lot of the same phrases, some descriptions made no sense (how do panties gush, anyway?). Lexi was fairly clueless which made the read somewhat frustrating.

Larkin Rose lives in a “blink and you’ve missed it” town in the beautiful state of South Carolina with her partner, Rose (hence the pen name), a portion of their 7 brats, a chunky grandson, and too many animals to name. Her writing career began two years ago when the voices in her head wouldn’t stop their constant chatter. After ruling out multiple personalities, and hitting the keyboard, a writer was born.

This is Larkin Rose's fifth novel. In this book, she introduces the reader to fashion designer Eve Harris, a driven workaholic at the top of the fashion ladder with no time for dating and romance. She gets physical relief using a British phone sex operator named Lexi.

Also introduced is Jodi Connelly, a very successful paid escort who was once a phone sex operator but has pared her phone sex client list down to a special three, one of whom is Eve.

Both women are obsessed with the other without ever having met in person and neither has any interest in meeting in person because they are certain they will be disappointed with reality. The chances of meeting are slim to none because Eve lives in New York City and Jody lives in London. Little do they know that they would, indeed, meet. Neither could possibly foretell the cataclysmic effects their meeting will have on their carefully controlled lives.

Rose has written a book that no reader will be able to easily put down. This is a tightly woven story so well written that there's not single misstep. From start to finish, the story moves quickly forward. In the hands of a lesser writer, this story could very well have become trite. Larkin's sure hand makes this a compelling story of two women looking for the same thing.

There is one caveat, though. The intimate meetings between Eve and Jody are explicit. If you prefer the details of sexual meetings to be hinted at rather then drawn in vivid detail, this is not the book for you.

Ridiculous... but fun

So this is the kind of book you don’t want to get caught reading.

Random stranger on BART: “Oh, that book looks fun, what’s it about?”

Me: “Um… it’s a romance... about a woman in love with a phone sex operator.”

No. Seriously… No. I’m not explaining that to anybody. It’s like a Ho-Ho. Those damn things are delicious. But you don’t want anyone to see you eat it.

So this book was fun. I think it’s the fluffiest book I’ve ever read, but it’s still fun. Nothing more.

This is the first book I've read by Larkin Rose and I was so satisfied (very much so), I've read all the rest.

The chemistry between these two women is electric! One has a secret which will be her undoing, but can that be changed? Their relationship is much more complex than I would expect from a matinee romance novel. I loved hearing Jodi's continuous inner monologue which presents a completely different woman than the hardened, cool escort that she presents to the world.

Let's just get it out of the way: The Sex scenes are as HOT as they get. If you are looking for a quick, erotic read then you can't go wrong with this.
