Bob Coecke is Professor of Quantum Foundations, Logic and Structures at the University of Oxford, where he also heads the multi-disciplinary Quantum Group. Excellent book. Everything you need to know, and nothing you don't.

I was looking for books on compost and I usually check books out from my local library, if I can, before deciding to buy them. "Mr. Mulch" makes learning about compost easy to understand and a little fun too. It's clear what the dos and don't are. This book is fairly short and easy to pick up, read, then know what you need to know. Excellent.

accessible but thin

This book is a very accessible guide for gardeners to get information on composting and how to do it. It is neurotically focused on maximizing the amount you can make for your garden, including multiple recommendations to steal copious amounts of leaves from other lawns.

Its accessibility makes it a quick read but makes it disappointingly thin in other spots. I'm going to have to hit some additional resources to get a more rounded approach to composting that addresses the impacts of composting to reduce household waste, such as paper goods. I'm not convinced that paper towels shouldn't go in the compost pile.

This is the first contact I have with this sage. Spirituality essentially means leaving all refrencing (conceptuality) behind and come into a merging contact with the ultimate knowing ground of your existence. It has been there before you came up with the concept of "me". Some call it witness, some call it "rigpa". It is at the bottom of everything that exists. This is the remedy to releave us from the ISOLATION from the world and from ourselves from which we all suffer in our collective dream world.
The problem is that we are so hypnotized by the fabrications of our own mind (what we call thinking) that that constant traffic never gives us a direct view upon that ultimate clarity that is the light of an universal intelligence that inhabits everybody and everything.
Wu Hsin's citation: "The object is perceived and the eye is the instrument.
The eye is perceived and the mind is the instrument.
The mind is perceived and
The witness acts as the perceiver.
But the witness is not perceived."

About the Author
Scott Meyer grew up in the small town of Sunnyside, Washington. He began his career in humor by working as a standup comedian and radio personality, a highlight of which was participating as the opening act in Weird Al Yankovic’s “Running with Scissors” tour. Following a long stint touring the United States and Canada, Scott settled down in Orlando, Florida, where he works on his ongoing comic strip, Basic Instructions. High Tech, Low Comedy, Good Ol' Fashioned Geek Fun

After reading the first novel of the series, I was excited to continue with Magic 2.0's Spell or High Water. For the most part, I did enjoy the book - it was a fun, relaxing read that didn't require a lot of attention or effort to read, which for a grad student is the nicest of breaks.

I was disappointed, though, by the resolutions of the different plots presented in this novel. Everything came together to quickly and neatly compared to the build-up which was the majority of the book. That being said, though, I don't think there could have truly been any better conclusions. The epilogues were also really cute and well worth getting through the rest of the book.

I will be going on to read the next installment of the series. Magic 2.0 is really a fun and light-hearted series to get into when you just need a light read and a little break from everything else, and I totally recommend that for anyone.

A solid follow up to Off to be the Wizard. Very comfortable and quite amusing, some of the gags / punch lines are telegraphed but (IMO) that goes with having your characters somewhat frozen in their maturity levels (geek mode). It should be noted that both the romantic situations and violence are softened and indirect (a PG-13 feel throughout) which I found "charming". While there are some humorously presented deep thought issues (Free will, the nature of knowledge etc.) they do not become a distraction. The two major plotlines are presented much more intelligently than (IMO) book one.

This is the second book in the 'Magic 2.0' series. I purchased it for listening on my hour long commute to work and it has proven to be highly entertaining and a worthy successor to the first book (Off to Be the Wizard). It's really best if you start with the first book since this one builds on the previous installment and, while forgiving and re-explaining a couple of the more important story-points/characters, assumes that you already have a familiarity with the whos, whens, wheres, and whys of the previous story, characters, and plot.

I've already purchased the 3rd book (An Unwelcome Quest) and will review that one as well, once I'm finished with it.

I got the first book through Audible and getting it to play through my car's infotainment system was a major pain (Ford SYNC Gen2 w/ MFT). I decided to get the second audio-book in CD format and highly recommend that others do so as well (to my ears, the audio quality on the CD beats the Audible version hands down and my car's player had no issues with playback *** note: your cd player must support .mp3 files or you can copy the files to your media player of choice).

Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase and very much look forward to getting started on the next book.

Such a fascinating character deserves an equally fascinating story

Originally published in 1830, Gobseck is among the earliest handful of works to be included in Balzac's magnum opus La Comédie Humaine, a collection of over 90 novels and stories in which he attempts to depict all the myriad aspects of French society. This novella contains many of the same characters that feature in his novel Père Goriot. Though that masterpiece was published five years later than Gobseck, the two works must have been conceived somewhat simultaneously, as their stories are intricately interwoven. That said, one need not have read one in order to enjoy the other, and even those with no knowledge of Père Goriot can still appreciate Gobseck.

Late one evening in the salon of the Vicomtesse de Grandlieu, the conversation turns to the discussion of a young man, Ernest de Restaud, for whom the Vicomtesse's niece Camille bears some romantic feelings. A guest and friend of the family, the attorney Monsieur Derville, shares a story from his past which he claims relates to the young man. The connection is not readily apparent, however, as the story he tells is primarily concerned with a former neighbor of his, the moneylender Jean-Esther van Gobseck. "Daddy Gobseck," as he is sometimes affectionately called, is an aged man of action with a mysterious past whose entire existence and personal philosophy revolves around the acquisition of wealth. He craves money not for the things it will buy him, but for the effect it gives him over people's lives. He considers himself and a small group of his professional colleagues to be the ten most powerful men in Paris. As people of all walks of life come crawling to him, begging for loans at usurious rates, their personal dramas become to Gobseck what the theatre is for art lovers. He is a connoisseur of desperation. Derville develops a social relationship with his neighbor, but eventually must consult the moneylender on a matter of business. From that point on he becomes Gobseck's legal advisor and bears witness to many of the old man's dealings. When Anastasie de Restaud, the daughter of Père Goriot, consults the usurer in hopes of concealing from her husband the fortune that she has wasted on her lover, the real drama of the story begins.

The novella starts out auspiciously enough. Balzac's character sketch of Gobseck is remarkably vivid and absolutely fascinating. The book takes a turn for the worse, however, the deeper it delves into the affairs of Madame de Restaud. The dramatic events that lead the characters to seek out the moneylender are riveting. The mathematics of their business transactions, on the other hand, often dull the emotional impact of the plot. In Gobseck, as in other of his works, Balzac demonstrates his fascination with legal proceedings. He delights in the mechanics of wills, deeds, writs, and contracts--a proclivity that this reader, for one, does not share. Were it not for the tedium and confusion inspired by so much clerical detail, Gobseck would likely be every bit as strong as Père Goriot.

If you haven't already read Père Goriot I would strongly suggest you do so, not because it's a prerequisite for reading this book, but simply because it's Balzac's greatest work. If you enjoyed that excellent novel, then you will probably find much to appreciate in Gobseck as well. Despite the preoccupation with legal matters in its latter half, Gobseck is still a very good story overall, and Balzac has endowed it with a few truly unforgettable scenes. The singular title character alone makes it well worth the reading.

A SMALL MASTERPIECE BY THE FATHER OF CONTINENTAL REALISM

One of Balzac's small masterpieces, GOBSECK is the story of a brilliant and emotional hardened old Jewish moneylender who is a font of pyschological insight when it comes to humankind's greed, vanity and other dark motives. (Balzac manages to do this fascinating character study without being at all anti-semitic.) This astonishing novelist was God-like in that he loved humanity at its best and at its worst. This particular novella is free of the structural weaknesses and wild digressions that mar some of Balzac's longer works. GOBSECK is a key piece in understanding Balzac's gigantic fictional work of ninety-two interlocking fictions known as THE HUMAN COMEDY. Monsieur Gobseck is the father of Esther Gobseck, the most beautiful of all Balzac's many beautiful courtesans. Like the heroine of so many operas by the author's favorite composer Rossini, Esther dies for love of a man unworthy of her. Balzac always wrote with extraordinary insight and affection about the lives of women at every level of French society. Esther Gobseck is the central character in one of the author's great tomes: Les Splendeurs et Miseres des Courtisanes. The English title is usually A HARLOT HIGH AND LOW. The novella GOBSECK also provides a stunning wealth of information about the world of finance in 19th-century France. The French were practicing every form of financial double dealing long before Americans became horrified by the ongoing crimes of Wall Street money brokers. Reading Balzac is always an education -- no matter whether he is writing about the visual arts, the machinations of government officials, classical music, the particular ways lovely women flirt, or the nearly insane vacillations of public opinion. Don't pick up a Balzac novel unless you are prepared to pay attention. If you push ahead, you will be more than amply rewarded.

We should hate him, I am sure many readers do, but instead we cheer him on partly because because he is so clever, partly because he simply profits from the mistakes of others. Gobseck's gains may be excessive but they aren't entirely unfair.

For all that, Gobseck is unlovable. He isn't actually malevolant, he isn't even dishonest. He deeply respects the world. "Life is a craft, a profession, that one must take the trouble to learn" says he about about a man dying for being too sensitive and for not knowing how to overcome the adversities of life. But while understanding how the man got beaten, one of the few men form whom he held some esteem, Gobseck has no empathy for him. He simply doesn't love anything, so how can we love him?

World-renowned for her iconic black-and-white street photographs, New York City’s visual poet laureate Helen Levitt also possessed a little-known archive of color work, which was been collected for the first time in Slide Show, her third powerHouse Books monograph.

In 1959, and again in 1960, Helen Levitt received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation to photograph in color on the streets of New York, where she had photographed two decades earlier in black-and-white. But tragically, the best of these pioneering color pictures were stolen from her apartment in 1970 and she had to start over again. In 1974 the new work was shown as a continuous slide projection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art—an early example of a slide show presentation by a museum and one of the first exhibitions of serious color photography anywhere in the world.

Slide Show presents more than one hundred photographs—including eight surviving images from the 1959–60 series—more than half of which have never been exhibited or published before. This impressive monograph is a worthy successor to her magnum opus, Crosstown (powerHouse, 2001), which included the largest collection of her color pictures to date, and to her more intimate volume of black-and-white work, Here and There (powerHouse, 2004), which presented more than eighty “unknown” Levitts taken over six decades.

Starred Review. Often squalid and always unsentimental, but full of wonder and sly humor, photographer Levitt's New York City is both familiar and startling, never more so than in these color photos from the early 1970s. (The book also includes a handful of prints from 1959–1960.) Without the arty distancing effect of black-and-white (for which she is primarily known), Levitt's trademark wit has more hard-edged immediacy. Levitt's city on a summer afternoon, the time of day when most of these photos were taken, is as full of oddities as the ocean floor. In one striking shot, a tiny girl crouches awkwardly by the curb like a little crab, her delicate knees and elbows askew. Levitt seems to regard the human body as a fascinating bit of found sculpture. She captures a man's belly sagging in counterpoint to a crumpled car fender, a beggar's folds of fat hanging down like the fabric of his rag bags and the brutal contrast between an old, bent-over couple and the gleaming hoods of a pair of sport cars. Old age and poverty are on extensive display, but the effect is never grim. Levitt—who still lives and works in New York—never lets the pathetic and dirty overshadow the pure pleasure of seeing without flinching. (Feb.)

About the Author
Helen Levitt (1913-2009) had her first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1943. Levitt’s photographs appeared in Edward Steichen’s landmark 1955 show The Family of Man and in more recent exhibitions of great importance, including MoMA’s Photography Until Now and the National Gallery of Art’s On the Art of Fixing a Shadow in Washington, D.C., both celebrating the invention of photography. She has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Levitt’s reputation as New York City’s master street photographer was further cemented in 2001 when her photographs were featured in the opening sequence of Ken Burns’ acclaimed PBS documentary series, New York. The author of the critically acclaimed, best-selling monographs Crosstown, Here and There, and Slide Show (powerHouse Books, 2001, 2004, and 2005), Levitt lived and worked in New York City, naturally.

John Szarkowski is director emeritus of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and was the director of the department from 1962 to 1991, in which time he oversaw more than one hundred exhibitions and the inauguration of MoMA’s photography collection galleries, and edited and contributed writing to various publications. His exhibitions include New Documents, Mirrors and Windows, Photography until Now, and retrospectives of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, and Eugène Atget. Szarkowski is the recipient of the International Center of Photography Infinity Awards for Writing and for Lifetime Achievement, the Royal Photographic Society Progress Medal, and the National Arts Club Gold Medal for Photography, to name a few. He has taught at Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, and Yale. Szarkowski returned to picture making in 1991, and has exhibited his work at Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York and the Cleveland Museum of Art. He lives in New York.

Disappointing Printing

I'm a big fan of Helen Levitt's work & I would love to give this book a 5 star review. Unfortunately her excellent photography is not presented well due to a poor print job. It seems that something went wrong in the scanning or pre press phase. All the photos are too light & the colours are washed out. This is not how Kodachrome should look. Some of the same images are printed in the German book titled 'Helen Levitt' & the difference is significant. The photos in the German book are much more accurate. Unfortunately this publication is no longer in print & hard to come by.

I already knew that this book 'Slide Show' had poor reproductions as I had a chance to view a copy in the library. I bought it anyway because it is the only way to see some of her photos. I can't think what went wrong as Powerhouse seems to be a quality publisher & I own other photography books by them where the printing is fine.

Early Color

What a remarkable treasure to have this book of Helen Levitt's color work. Pre-dating Eggleston this is inventive and wonderful to look at. While she is mostly known for her black and white photographs, this opens a new level of appreciation for her contributions to photography. Beautifully printed, this is highly recommended for fans of color photography.

The least glamorous photos of New York you are ever likely to see

The photos in this collection portray working people and poor people, people who are poorly dressed, people without air conditioning on hot summer days, people with ugly pets. The collection is oddly timeless; many photographs of New York can be dated to within a few years by looking at store awnings and, clothing styles, and haircuts, but not these. The people whom Levitt photographed are wearing clothing that was shapeless, ugly, and impossible to date in 1960, 1970, or 1980. With the exception of a couple of photos that show movie theater marquees in the background, nothing here can be dated.

The photos are all the more remarkable because they flatter nobody. Did people give permission to be photographed, knowing how they would look? Had they given up long ago?

Some of the photos give their subjects dignity, but not all. The book is sometimes cruel, sometimes funny.

As an aside, I'd love to know where these photos were taken. Some look like East Harlem, but not a single photo shows a street sign, and I can't identify any of the stores.

Good attempt...

The story wasn't that bad, but the errors and typos were so numerous and distracting that I started feeling pissed off and I almost didn't bother to read act 3 at all. After a while, because of the way this was written, I couldn't tell whether Santino knew Brown was a cop... Also, Hill's real name changed from Hill St. Claire to Shane Hill (WTF)?

Good read, however

Good read,however, a lot of grammatical errors and confusion of person.
Examples: Through instead of threw
Confusion of person in story speaking of him however, stating her.
A lot of proof reading needed with the story.
A criminal who sells women into slavery and a law enforcement agent undercover falls in love with the same modern dancer that works for a burlesque club own by the Santino the criminial.

Inspirational

Very heart warming and touching. I could not put this book down. If you plan on reading make sure you have a box of tissues near. This book gives life new perspective. The author conveys a very heartfelt account of his very personal life knowing that he has limited time on earth with his very young son. It will change your life as you will find new appreciation for the "little things" in life that really mean the most.

Letters to Bryce

How sad for a Father to know how short his time on earth is but how wonderful for him to pour his heart and soul into letters that that will allow him (Bryce) to get to know him after his Father has passed.

What a great tribute to his son! I had a difference of opinion on several of Shaun's belief's but then again...who am I to judge? This is between him and his son Bryce and Shaun tried to be as honest and forthwright as he could with the time he had left.

I applaud Shaun.
