Autism Interventions - Exploring the Spectrum of Autism, 2nd Ed. (2014) by authors Carolyn Murray-Slutsky and Betty Paris, is a great resource for anyone working with an individual with and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This 540 page book is a full of information on a variety of topics that are commonly encountered by anyone attempting to address the challenges in teaching someone with Autism: parents and families, therapists, teachers, behavioralists!
The book includes chapters by many of the leaders in research, education, behavioral intervention and treatment. Topics include recent changes in diagnosis and neurodevelopmental aspects of the disorder that can be addressed in order to alter the course across the lifespan, improve engagement and successful interactions. The focus of this invaluable tool is treatment and solutions to the most common issues encountered. Problems are identified and explained and treatment specifics covered in detail, replete with pictures to ensure that the reader knows what to look for and how to deal with it.
Chapters discuss research related to the high incidence of sensory integration issues encountered, describing each of the sensory issues in a clear and easy-to-understand format. Solutions are offered through intervention chapters directed at each of the different types of sensory issues: Sensory Modulation Disorder with Over Responsivity, Under Responsivity or Sensory Seeking or Craving; Sensory Discrimination Disorders; Difficulty with Praxis/ Motor Planning and Oral Motor and Feeding Issues that are sensory-based. Behaviors and characteristics of each problem are identified as well as step by step methods of directly addressing each of the difficulties encountered.
Another common issue in individuals with an ASD are motor control and coordination, which affect development of play skills, functional skills like self care and dressing, affects academic performance in the school-aged child and work performance in the older person. Specific and common difficulties are explained with pictures and intervention strategies outlined with how to develop skills using specific equipment. Nowhere else can you find this information! It is clearly outlined and depicted making intervention easy to understand.
Three chapters are dedicated to Behavioral Issues seen, the common reasons for the behaviors, and how to manage them. Behaviors discussed in depth are Obtaining and Avoiding Behaviors; Repetitive and Restrictive, Self Stimulation and other challenging behaviors. Success in dealing with unwanted and challenging behavior depends upon correct identification of the function of the behavior and knowing what to do about the behavior. This book does a great job of explaining behaviors: their cause(s), the expression of what underlies the behavior(s), and what to about them. The information is organized in practical, easy-to-implement, successful methods.
Speech and Language Pathologists have dedicated two chapters to improving communication, a core feature in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Assessment is outlined, but the focus on intervention so that the problems can be addressed and communication developed. The "How and Why" of augmentative alternatives are outlined for those struggling with language and communication difficulties.
Development of Social and play skills are also addressed. Early play and how it changes as the child typically matures into adolescence is explained with concrete suggestions for developing play and social interaction in individuals who have difficulty with these skills, no matter what their age or level of function in these areas.
Finally, in this holistic text is the topic of Academic success and skill development. Foundational needs, Hidden Curriculum, Theory of Mind and Problem Solving and Decision Making are covered. This chapter is loaded with practical, easy-to-implement strategies to make the learning easier and more enjoyable.

Amazing, Entertaining AND Educational!!

This very talented author makes reading facts and figures about sleep something to keep you up at night because it is so fascinating and fun to read! Mr. Randall gives a very succinct summary of a wide variety of aspects of sleep, from who you sleep with to the first CPAP made from a vacuum cleaner. Each chapter is a new adventure in another mystery about sleep. I borrowed the book from the library and after the 10th post-it marking a particular section I decided I needed to buy my own copy! If you or a loved one has sleep issues, this is the book for you. It gives enough description about each aspect that it can help identify what the problem might be and could send you in the right direction for professional help, all while giving you a great read.

Good but dated

Buy it used. The information is a bit dated and no doubt a new version will come out a week after you buy it.
A lot of the content can be found on the UCD website.
All that said it is still a great resource to use to compare with other sources and your own findings.

More of an encyclopedia than a dictionary

As the name implies, this is a dictionary - but "topical encyclopedia" might be a better description, as the book provides tremendous detail and information on all aspects of Ancient Egypt, from geographic locations ("where is the Valley of the Kings") to more specific topics. Under the heading, "magic bricks" for example, the definition of these bricks is not only provided (they were special bricks placed at the four cardinal points of the compass in New Kingdom tombs), but details of what was in the bricks (amulets to protect the deceased from evil depending on the cardinal direction the brick was placed), and what was inscribed on them.

There are diagrams of tombs and temples, details and myths around the dieties, brief biographies of pharaohs, and all manner of minutae that even seasoned Egyptologists would find interesting. For anyone interested in Ancient Egypt, this is an outstanding resource.

One of the Best Places to Start!

Ten years ago this book was given to me in hardcover. With a life long interest in Egypt and Egyptologists in the family, inevitably I have read a great many books on Ancient Egypt itself. Of all of the books that I own, this is probably one of my most uses because it does truly live up to its name. It is a fabulous overview of the culture, history and life of the Ancient Egptians anywhere. You can look up just about any term, place name, deity, Pharaoh, etc and you are given a great deal of good information that informs but does not overwhelm. Dr. Shaw and Dr. Nicholson have done an outstanding job of making Ancient Egypt very accessible in this little book. I highly recommend it for anyone of any age who might be interested in the subject.

I bought this book at the British Museum a few weeks ago and it has not left my side since. It's perhaps the most informative book on Ancient Egypt I've ever come across. Perfect for hobbiests to enthusiasts to anyone who wants a comprehensive resource. The book is amazingly complex in detail and filled with amazing pictures.

Great Book!!

This was a quick, hot read. This is not a full size book, but it covered a lot in a short time. Luke is married in name only to Cailin’s sister. Cailin has always loved Luke and believes that her sister only married Luke because she wanted to make sure that Cailin didn’t get him. Luke can no longer fight his attraction to Cailin, when he sees her again; things get hot and heavy between Luke and Cailin pretty fast. I really enjoyed the characters in this book, and can’t wait to read more of these characters in next books in this series.

Caribbean Accent's 4-Lime review of LUKE (Forbidden Lust #1) by Diana Bocco

LUKE (Forbidden Lust #1) deals with adultery, so I was hesitant at first about reviewing it but Diana Bocco does a great job of addressing the issue, albeit in 79 pages.

The story begins with billionaire businessman, Luke Blackwell, (say that three times fast :) ) reflecting on the fact that he married the wrong Walker sister under a haze of lust, and that he now feels trapped in a loveless marriage.

See he didn't sign a pre-nup, so his ambitious wife, Erika, stands to win big-time if he files for divorce before moving his assets around or if she discovers his secret attraction for her sister, Cailin.

Turns out Luke had acted on his feelings while drunk one Christmas, sharing a very intense kiss with Cailin in his garage. He apologised to Cailin while she chose to pay penance for kissing him back by not visiting again.

Now, one year later, Luke is preparing to file for divorce and Cailin has decided to accept her sister's latest invitation to visit.

When Luke unexpectedly finds Cailin taking a shower in his bathroom, a 'steamy' encounter follows but Cailin makes it clear she won't cross 'that line' because he's still married to her sister.

I really liked Cailin's sense of morality and honesty, for she decides to stop hiding from her feelings but has no intention of being 'the other woman.'

Luke too has his own scruples but might have given in to his feelings if not for Cailin's stance on the issue. Later on in the novella however, they do have sex, prompting Luke to say "to hell with everything" he might lose by filing for divorce now.

These two have serious chemistry, and I cheered on Cailin when she finally confronted her oh so unlikeable sister about going after Luke after finding out Cailin was attracted to him.

(It would be interesting to see Erika redeemed in a future book.)

Luke and Cailin eventually get their HEA but this being a novella, I would have loved to read more about them as a couple post-divorce.

I really enjoyed LUKE, hence my 4-lime rating. I'm looking forward to the future books in these series :)

5 Sexy, Steamy, Lusty Stars!

The Review:
I enjoy Diana Bocco's stories. They are always well written, to the point and have the steamiest scenes. This one is no different! This short story is about sixty-four pages long and is filled with a fun, erotic story of forbidden lust and love.

Story/Characters...
Luke said it all when he said he married the wrong sister. Erika may have captured his eye with her saucy curves and flirtatious personality, but it was beautiful, sweet Cailin who eventually captured his heart. Trouble is, he didn't realize it until it was too late and he married the social climbing, money grubbing Erika with no prenup.

Luke and Cailin had major chemistry right from the beginning of the story and reading their scenes was so much fun as their chemistry rocketed off the pages!

Cailin is a lovely character. She was smart, sassy and brave to delve into a passion filled moment with Luke even though it was against the rules of sisterhood. She stepped back when her sister took Luke away from her after confiding to Erika she had feelings for him. She wanted to preserve what small sisterly bond they had even though it was evident Erika cared little for her younger sister.

But once Cailin realized their marriage was a farce and Luke had his eye on her, she gave in to her long awaited desires and allowed their passion to explode in one frantic kiss that turned into a short, scorching hot romp that bloomed into way more than either expected but both wanted.

But conniving Erika won't be trumped by her little sister and sets out to make Cailin question her actions. I really disliked Erika and I hope in future works we find she gets her comeuppance.

The Wrap Up:
This story was exciting, passionate and smokin' hot. I wanted way more than sixty-four pages but it was definitely a quick and fun read.
