Another fine volume in this series

This is the 12th book in this Kagero series. This time we are treated to a WWI type. There are 60 pages in the interior although for some reason the page numbering counts the card covers. Most pages show some wonderful CAD (computer aided design) drawings of the ship although there is a brief 10 page design, development, and service history with accompanying tables. The text is competent enough. There are some translation quirks like the foremast being referred to as the "bow mast" and the quarterdeck as the "stern deck" but for the most part it is quite readable. There are some debatable statements like the Lion class battlecruisers being the first to mount to mount 13.5" guns (the Orion class battleships ordered at the same time did as well).

The drawings are stunning as always but to my mind the shadowing was a little too realistic. Details like the submerged torpedo tubes and the breeches of the secondary battery could barely if at all be made out. This is the first ship in this series to have torpedo nets and they are depicted in both stowed and deployed condition. This was a very nice touch.

There were two interesting departures from previous practice in this volume. First, there were some interior details shown although not in particularly great detail. There was a turret cutaway and an amidships cutaway. Second, there is no unbound foldout with conventional line drawings. The only unbound foldout has more CAD drawings including the aforementioned amidships cutaway. As always make sure it is included if buying secondhand.

Highly recommended. This series never fails to excite when a new title is announced or fails to delight when finally released.

These Incredible Books

This whole series just blows my mind. It's like walking on the deck of the ship. I don't know how he does it, extruding 2d or whatever, but it is genuinely magic. I'm trying to scratchbuild the Queen Mary from prints that come with John Robert's Battlecruisers book, and there is no way I could get to first base without this book (I'm not very good). Even if you aren't building a model, every book in the series I've seen is just incredible. I've also got Bismarck and it's not quite as good, but they are all excellent.

For those who do not know much about battlecruisers,this book is informative About their armament,appearance,and design. one slight drawback is the lack of photos of the ship. The drawings show her from many angles and are in color.

Dapper Carter's Messy Life Gets Messier

Dapper Carter is back. His escapades are even more wild this time around. A few old friends return to help him through the foolishness that is his love life. The ladies still love him and he loves them back. Dr. Pepper, his no nonsense therapist not the beverage, gives him an assignment that gives the reader a better understanding of why Dapper behaves the way he does.

Dapper manages to get himself into some hilarious situations. I found myself giggling out loud at times. This was a good follow up to the 8 Rules of Dating. I'm anticipating Alan Mitchell's next novel.

A Book that Quenches a Reader's Thirst

When I read "Dapper Carter's 8 Rules of Dating", I enjoyed it to the fullest. Well-written and timely, I thought that was the last I would read about him. Nope. Lo and behold, "Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws" hit my email. I really couldn't stop reading this follow-up. Let me preface it this way: I'm the same age as Dapper, and the same astrological sign. Our lives are similar in some respects. However, what really caught me in this book was the characterization. We, the readers, learn more about Dapper in this sequel. More about his insecurities, his interactions with people, his life plans, etc. Still slick with his mouth, in many ways, Dapper leaves us with some gems.
In this book, we find Dapper post-marriage and on the brink of a milestone birthday. He has to do some vital introspection and decide what to do with the information. He enlists help with this task. A professional helps him dig deeper into his psyche, yet his life choices are the true harbingers of his personal truth.
I found the language of this book to be perfect. Not so "urban" that it would turn a reader off and not so high-brow that is was trying too hard. It found a middle ground that felt authentic. Friends of mine speak like this, as do yours. All the characters are described well and are believable. None seem to be out of their elements. You can envision these people in your everyday life. They're all relatable. Dapper's best friends are still around and have gone through some changes of their own.
Alan Mitchell has done it again. A very comical and witty book. Minus a few editorial issues, I give this book a 4 out of 5. The excerpt of the next book is in the back and I can't wait to read that.

Dapper's Journey

Dapper Carter is back with more fun and laughs in Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws by Alan Mitchell. Dapper has recovered from his recent divorce from Kennedy with his rules of dating. After mastering his 8 rules of dating, Dapper is lead into the arms of Rain Van Ness. Dapper learns that everything is not as it seems as his relationship with Rain ends.

Dapper's therapist, Dr. Pepper, gives him an assignment that prompts the 5 fatale flaws. While researching, Dapper meets a variety of women who bring out different behaviors in him. This journey of creating the 5 flaws has Dapper learning a lot about himself as a person and discovering who he is meant to be.

Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws is about a man finding himself whether good or bad. I love that readers will see a different side of Dapper Carter in this new installment. This was a funny story of the main character's self- discovery. My favorite flaw is "Sabotage" because we all are our own critic and often times we harm ourselves in doing so, which is one of Dapper's characteristics. The author does a wonderful job in placing women in Dapper's life that are very unique. I appreciated the flaws being more solid than the corny rules in the previous book. This was an entertaining book with a hint of drama which held my interest. I recommend Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws to others.

An Insightful Primer

Although slightly dated due to the rapid expansion of language learning technologies, this insightful 1995 primer for new English teachers remains relevant two decades after publication. Richards and Lockhart move beyond abstract theories to provide practical classroom tips for both novice and more experienced teachers. It's also a powerful antidote to fashionable educational dogmas. I recently bought a copy for a friend debating whether to teach abroad.

More "aha!" moments than I could have ever expected

I first read this book when I started my MA program four years ago. As a new teacher, I found it to be full of good advice. I just re-read the book at the end of my MA program, and found that the words of Richards and Lockhart are even more relevant than ever.
The format of the book gives the reader many opportunities to reflect on his or her own practice AND experience as a learner. The principles put forth in this book have truly helped guide me as a teacher and curriculum developer. This is not a book that goes on and on espousing pedagogical theory. Instead, it offers practical advice based on sound principles, while also presenting a wide arrray of questions and hands-on activities to guide the education/ESL practitioner.
Unlike most of the textbooks and articles I read for my MA program, this is one I plan to keep and refer to time and again.
